If you have had teeth pulled, or need to have gaps filled in from teeth that you lost months ago, chances are you will be having dental implant surgery.

Before you do, however, there are some things you need to know about taking care of your dental implants after surgery by DSA’s dental implants abroad service. Things that will help make sure your new implants last the full 25 years of a usual life span.

Floss every day — When you first have dental implants installed in your mouth, you may think you do not have to worry about flossing anymore. After all, they are not real teeth, right?

In fact, you should floss around your implants every day just like you do the teeth you have always had. This is because plaque can affect them in just the same way as it affects your teeth.

If you do not, it is highly likely you will have implant failure down the road. That requires having them removed and new ones installed, which can be an expensive procedure.

Use an inter-dental toothbrush — Rather than relying on your usual toothbrush once you have your implants put in, buy an inter-dental toothbrush instead.

This is a toothbrush that is designed to more easily get into the spaces between teeth, as well as to clean the fronts, backs and tops of your teeth correctly. They are also very good for properly cleaning wide spaces that a normal toothbrush will probably skip right over.

Cut down on sugar — Sugar is one of the worst things you can eat when it comes to taking care of your dental implants after surgery.

It causes plaque to build up more than almost anything else, and also can damage dental implants over time.

Cut down on the sugar you consume and, after you do eat any, make sure you brush your teeth. This also goes for any sugar you may add to or consume in drinks as well.

Water irrigation — If you really want to have problem-free dental implants, using water irrigation can be a good choice.

Used daily, this can often remove particles trapped between your teeth that even a special brush may have difficulties getting to.

Regular check ups — A good way to minimize any possible problems with your dental implants is to make sure you go for regular dental check ups.

These are important as this is a time when your dentist can see anything that may be happening to your dental implants, and come up with a course of action to fix them. If you skip dental check ups, however, by the time you do go and problems are found, it may be too late to fix them.

Problems to report to your dentist — If you do notice your gums seem inflamed, you are having difficulties chewing or you have any pain around the dental implant area, now is the time to return to your dentist for a check up.

Even if there is no cause for concern, it is still better to be safe than sorry.
